© The Bakersfield Californian January 14, 1935 Gwendolyn D. Johnson Gwen Johnson, 61, was born to Frank and Olga Johnson in Dunsmuir, CA. After high school she joined the U.S. Army and served 23 years; she retired as a Master Sargeant. During her military career she served as a medic and an air traffic controller, the latter job being a little ironic because Gwen had difficulty making decisions. After surviving melanoma for nearly 30 years, Gwen lost a 2-1/2 year battle with a rare cancer. As hard as it is to say good-bye, it is comforting to know she is no longer in agony. All who knew Gwen would agree she was one of a kind. She loved everything about life - especially good food and wine, all sports, movies, grocery shopping, talking about politics, little animals, getting together with family and friends, and "putting a few sheckles" in slot machines. Left behind to mourn her passing are her sister-in-law, Sara; brother, Kenneth; sister, Cindy; nephews, Kenneth, Michael, Brian, Kevin, Erik and Brandon; nieces, Roxanne, Shanna and Melissa; aunts, Quetita and Eleanor and eight cousins. She also leaves a circle of broken-hearted friends who loved her dearly and will miss her terribly. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11th, at 10:00 a.m., at Kern River Family Mortuary, 1900 N. Chester Avenue, 392-9010. Weather permitting, burial will follow at Blue Mtn. Cemetery, in Woody, CA. Per request of the family no viewing is scheduled. Gwendolyn D. Johnson Dec. 23, 1944 ~ Mar. 4, 2006 Kern River Family Mortuary Legacy.com
