He passed away peacefully after suffering from multiple cardiovascular complications. Vernal was born on November 27, 1920 to Tom and Viola Cozby. He was born and raised in Bakersfield, California. He graduated from Kern County Union High School, now known as Bakersfield High School. He married Helen Louise Galyen on July 11, 1942 and was blessed with 67 blissful years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, their two children, Diane Fry and husband Jeff, and Richard Cozby; 5 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren, to whom Vernal was known as - their wonderful "Papa". He served in World War II in the Army Air Corps for 3 years as a medical technician and clerical worker. Over the course of his career, he worked as a bookkeeper for Bank of America, a delivery man for Ben Hur Products, and an Engineering Technician for Marathon Oil Company for 36 years. In life, he found enjoyment in writing poetry, traveling, bowling, gardening and working on household projects. His love for music was expressed in his singing, whistling, and playing the violin. He was a member of a quartet in the Army. He had a profound love and conviction for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was a long time member of the First Assembly of God Church. He served as a church deacon, shared his testimony in the Prison Ministry, and taught the "Home-Builder's" class at Full Gospel Tabernacle. Our "Papa" will lovingly be remembered for his love for this family, willingness to always help others, loyalty to his friends, and enjoyment for life. He is an inspiration to others for his loving, devoted marriage, and for his dedication to the Lord. He is greatly missed.
