© The Bakersfield Californian Sunday, 2 September 2007 Jewel "Lefty" Ellis A celebration of Lefty's life will be held graveside on Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at 10:00 a.m., at Shafter Memorial Park, with a reception immediately following at Valley Bible Church on Pine Street, Shafter, CA, and a visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Mish Funeral Home (120 Minner Ave.) Oildale, California. Lefty was born on September 11, 1923 in Westminister, Texas to Treva and Florence Ellis. He enlisted in the Army before turning 18 and was a proud veteran of WWII. He received with honor a Purple Heart, W-3 Bronze Stars, a WW II Victory Medal and an American Campaign Medal. Upon returning from the war, he married the love of his life Irene and had two sons. He worked for Ranchers Cotton Oil as a supervisor for 37 years until retiring in 1985. He loved to laugh, joke and talk to everyone and anyone. He loved to travel with his trailer especially to Pismo Coast Village. He was a wonderful husband, loving father and fun grandpappy. His laughter will be greatly missed by all. Lefty passed away peacefully on August 29, 2007 and is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, J.V., Peck, and L.B.; his sisters, Mary Lou Ellis and Bonnie Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Irene; his sons, Don and wife, Jody and Darrel; his grandchildren, Clifton, Diane Wurster, Dawnett Benson, Leslie, Jennyfer Utt and Treva; numerous great- grandchildren; his brothers, Denver, Jerry Don, and J.D.; and sisters, Olene Carroll, Omega Smith and Gloria Nell Icho.
