© The Bakersfield Californian Tuesday, 25 August 2009 Emily Jewell [Wilson] McCann Born on April 22, 1925 to Ada & Archimedes Wilson in Russellville, Arkansas; Mom was the youngest of nine children. In 1937, Mom's family moved from the farm in Arkansas to Southern California for more opportunities. In 1941, Mom married Joe Jennings and they had one son, Robert William. In 1948, Mom married Joseph Michael McCann and they had one daughter, Joann Jewell. During the course of her career, she worked multiple jobs including employment at Shipman's during WWII. Mom ultimately retired after over 30 years as a meat wrapper in the grocery industry through the Butcher's Union. In 1978, Mom and Daddy moved from Whittier, CA to Bakersfield. In 1987, Daddy retired and they moved from Bakersfield to Yucaipa, CA so they could be near her sister, Alleen. In 2001, they moved back to Bakersfield and Daddy passed away in March 2001. Mom never ceased to amaze us with her generosity and compassion for everyone she met. She always said that she "never met a stranger". She loved to entertain at our home and she and daddy "danced a million miles". You could always find her outside tending to her beautiful garden, especially her roses and irises. My brother and I had a fabulous childhood. Our parents were always there attending all of our functions and participating in many of them. Love of family was always the most important thing in Mom's life. Mom passed away on August 22, 2009 in Bakersfield, CA after a lengthy battle with emphysema. She was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by: son, Robert Wm. Jennings; daughter Joann Jewell and husband William Voss; grandson Robert Wm. Jennings II; granddaughter JoLane Jewell Blaylock and husband Taylor Lewis; granddaughter DeAnna and husband Tony Gullotta; and great grandsons Jacob Alexander and Jarrett Austin Lewis and Anthony Joseph and Dominic Jennings Gullotta. With our blended families, Mom is also survived by grandson Robert and wife Desiree Voss; granddaughter Jamie and husband Jeff Randall; granddaughter, Tracey and husband Josh Harmon; as well as five additional great-grand grandchildren with two more on the way. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Our family conveys our heartfelt thanks to the members of Optimal Hospice for their love and compassion during this difficult time. Public visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Daughty-Calhoun in Bakersfield. Graveside services will be held on Thursday August 27, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. at Rose Hills Cemtery in Whittier, Ca. Emily Jewell [Wilson] McCann, 22 April 1925 ~ 22 August 2009
