January, 1972 Josephine [Magill] Baker Mrs. Josephine Baker, of 1128 Chino Street, died on January 25, 1972, at the age of 94 years, at a local hospital in Santa Barbara, following a long illness. She moved to Santa Barbara about 1940, after the death of her husband. Josephine Magill was born January 6, 1878, in Harvey Co., Kansas, the daughter of John Marshall and Malinda Jane (Patton) Magill, and she moved from Kansas, with her parents to the Rialto area, in San Bernardino County, California in 1889. She lived most of her life from age eleven, in California, except for a short time in Arizona about 1920. Josephine Magill was married May 24, 1897, in San Bernardino County, California, to Charles R. Baker. He was born May 1878, in Nebraska, the son of Ira and Ellen A. Baker. Charles Baker died in 1939, in Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., California, and is buried in Pioneer Cemetery, in Watsonville. Josephine and Charles BAKER had two sons and two daughters: Lawrence G., Charles D., Elma L., and Charlotte J. Survivors include two sons, Lawrence G. Baker of Seaside, Ore., and Charles D. Baker of this city; two daughters, Mrs. Elma L. Flint of Santa Barbara and Mrs. Charles J. Conella, Burbank; two brothers, Monroe Magill of San Francisco and Arnold Magill of Yucaipa; seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Graveside services were held at Santa Barbara Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 28th, by Welch~Ryce Associates, with Rev. Gerald M. Stahly of Four Square Gospel Church officiating.
