Eugene Woodrow Wicker, 20, was born May 21, 1921 in Coweta, Oklahoma, he was the youngest of ten children.

He graduated from Coweta High School, and had wanted to go to college, but during the depression, he just didn’t have the money to continue his education so he joined the United States Navy.

On the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941 Eugene was on board the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, when the Japanese launched their sneak attack of the U.S. Naval Base. On duty in the radio room, Eugene alerted the rest of the crew to report to their battle stations. The USS Oklahoma took multiple torpedo hits in the first 10 minutes and began to capsize. Eugene was one of the 429 crew members to go down with the ship.

Eugene was preceded in death by his father; James Newton Wicker.

Eugene is survived by his mother; Ida Belle Wicker; sisters, Nellie, Ethel, Belle, Vergie, Alice, Edna; brothers, Harrold, Oscar and Ray.

Seaman 1st Class Eugene Woodrow Wicker will finally be coming home and laid to rest at 10:00 O’Clock Saturday, August 4, 2018 in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery with full military honors.
